11.26.09: Thanksgiving
[info]david_byrne

On this day we sincerely give thanks for life, for being alive — an experience unlike any other. Well, we don’t know any other anyway, most of us. The floats and balloons go by a couple of blocks from my house, which sounds glamorous and exciting until you see the crowds and the frantic behavior by both parent and child out there.

My Daddy Says

My mom and dad are visiting. Mom is watching An American in Paris on TV (though she nods off regularly) and dad is devouring my New York Review of Books issues that I save for him.

I hollered out to dad, “Dubai is broke!” but dad (surprisingly) didn’t know about the existence of the tiny desert enclave that, with no real resources, has built up a massive amount of real estate and wealth. It's a self-invented mercantile hub — a nexus of shipping, trading and banking.

Lightning strikes the world’s tallest building in Dubai… often…

It's much like Hong Kong in a way. They went crazy with the tall buildings and the splashy lifestyle, but now the piper’s come a calling and they have built much of it on debt. Debt they can’t repay. Ooops. I recall articles a couple of years ago about Americans living the good life in Dubai, making tons of money quickly, boozing it up in luxury apartments, hanging mainly with other newly rich expats.

I imagine other cities and territories that have no real assets will find themselves in a similar spot quite soon. Detroit is already just about gone — though urban farming is rumored to be a novel use for the vacant acreage; as is Phoenix, though they do have mineral wealth in the surrounding deserts, which is why it was seized from Mexico in the first place. The suburban town my parents live in, Columbia, MD, is in a comparable situation. It is a corporate development that was traded to a Chicago company, which has built lots of new condos and office buildings in recent years, as has been done all over NYC, imagining that the real estate bubble would go on expanding ad infinitum. Meanwhile, the town has no resources and they don’t actually make anything.

It seems to me these systems are all based on faith — faith that is easy to sustain when the money is fast and flows easily, and when there is no end in sight. Faith then seems justified. Those who doubt get laughed at. It’s not a reality-based system — as the Bush administration used to say, “We make the reality.” It’s true, to an extent, that faith certainly does make reality — if enough people believe something to be true, then you can predict that things will occur as if it is… until someone or something pulls the bottom card out. The art market is, and always was, a faith-based system — and so far, many of the believers still feel secure.

My dad pointed out that the country’s banking problems are only the tip of the economic iceberg, but we know so much about them because bankers whine louder than many others, and have connections — so folks hear their whining. But, my daddy says, the unemployed are a huge and growing financial drain, as are the massive number of prisoners in the US — not Gitmo folks, but regular jails are a massive soak… as are health care costs (the US insurance and pharma companies have managed to create the most expensive health care system in the world, though it is not always the best!)… and finally, duh, Afghanistan and Iraq are bleeding trillions out of the US economy and flushing them down the drain in the sense that only a miniscule percentage of those trillions, trillions!, actually creates anything — very, very little of it creates jobs, employment or infrastructure. It’s basically money down the toilet as far as the US economy goes — and now we really can’t afford to throw that kind of money away. Granted, those trillions are supposed to be guaranteeing us some kind of global safety and security — or so we were told — but pretty much the exact opposite has happened, as the brushfires spread to neighboring hills that were previously fairly safe.

The wars (or, more correctly, invasions) in Afghanistan and Iraq are tied, intimately, to the global economy and also the daily lives of every American. A country that threw away trillions on invasions that have not accomplished their objectives (which often were not even clear in the first place) is in no position to deal with the costs of exploding unemployment, crumbling infrastructure, education and economic collapse. The public is beginning to sense this, and as their pockets become increasingly empty they, I sense, feel that maybe now that there has been sufficient “revenge” for 9/11, and maybe the venting has been accomplished — the dubious mission has been accomplished — it’s time to move on.

Drew some more sketch cards! This time for the Iron Man 2 movie set coming out uh… next year I guess. I only did 10 this time around so I decided to do something I haven’t done since my college art school days: paint traditionally! This meant dusting off my old paints and brushes and trying to remember how to use them again. It was fun!

I got my wish granted this morning. Just enough snow to trigger my sleep-a-little-longer gland because I finally caught up on work last night. This is from just before the sun came up.

Now to the office cave! Blizzards lead people to do a lot of online t-shirt and sock shopping and I've got a mailman to wrestle.

In the interest of wrapping this up this week, here's the next six ...

The Will Eisner Omnibus
W.W. Norton & Co. (Will Eisner) 2005-2007
Wikipedia article

Will Eisner's books have been reprinted many times over the last several decades, but W.W.Norton & Co. was the first publisher to reproduce Eisner's best work in library volumes. The six stories collected in The Contract With God Trilogy and Will Eisner's New York Stories are also available as stand-alone volumes, but I prefer the omnibus editions, which sport bold color covers illustrated by Eisner himself. The overall package is handled with a respect for both the artist and the medium, which was Eisner's own goal for the industry. (It's also worth noting that, contained in New York Stories is The Building, the one comic which can actually cause me to tear up)

Gallery Show News ...
[info]calamityjon
Hey all, first off, the Friends of the Nib show at Howard House mentioned here has been extended from its original three-day run to the entire month of December. (!!) The opening was an immense success, and the art turned in (around 400 pieces!) was gorgeous. If you're in the Pioneer Square area, please swing on by and give it a look.

Additionally, I'm dropping off some more chipboard pieces tonight for a show at Snowmonkey's House of Monsters on Capitol Hill.

Here's what gallery owner Curt Waller has to say about the events at Snowmonkey this week:

This week Snowmonkey is hosting THREE events in a row, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. PLEASE come and visit us, as the shop has been dismally slow, and we need to do good Holiday sales if we are to stay in business in the new year. And don't forget that Snowmonkey has the BEST STOCKING STUFFERS EVER! Monsters as low as fifty cents each!

THURSDAY night (Dec 10, 6:00- 10:00) is the Capitol Hill Art Walk, and we will be having an "UNDER $50" Art Sale with a variety of our regular artists, including myself, Atticus, Bunny, Jonathan Morris, and Kyle Kesterson.

FRIDAY night (Dec 11, 4:00 - 9:00) we are hosting a special jewelry sale featuring the jewelry of Diane Anderson. who has some consigned work in the shop as well.
Her FB event reads: "Jewelry is handmade by Diane and is hammered fine silver & sterling silver with semi-precious gems. Come say hi & enjoy a glass of wine and celebrate the season!
Check out this super-secret shop location. I will be donating a percentage of profits towards a friend's cancer healthcare. Snowmonkey's is child friendly so bring the whole family."

SATURDAY (Dec 12, 2:00 pm) we are hosting "The Kids are Making it Themselves," presented by Coco Howard. "An exhibition and sale of handmade plush characters from forty or so of Seattle's finest kids." This is a culmination of a creature-making class that Coco has been teaching, and should be super awesome!

Please come check out these events, and don't forget to tell EVERYONE you know about Snowmonkey's!

Snowmonkey's really is great and quirky, and if you're looking for unusual holiday gifts, I'd highly recommend it.

Another really good interview.... if only, when I'd started, people had read my comics before they did interviews, I wouldn't be so cynical now.

I caught Gilbert's cold, and that makes me mad. It's also just as muggy and disgusting outside as it was in the middle of July, and that REALLY makes me mad.

These things, these things that can't be helped, they make me SO MAD!

Some things that made me happy today... We had play practice for The Grinch and I played his dog Max. In art class, we talked about hilarious things and I couldn't stop laughing. We had chorus practice after school today and I knew my lyrics/notes.

a couple months went by where i didn't really have anything pressing to do, much less anything that was making me rent-paying money, but then 3 days and a few separate, unrelated happenings later i have my plate overflowingly full. i guess that's good. but also bad depending on how you look at it... what will be the fate of Wet Moon 6 and Mountain Girl?? how can i get all this stuff done?? XD

there was enough of a lull in deadlines that i actually played a little bit of video games which is a really rare occurrence since i don't like them except for old Mega Man and Super Metroid and artsy freeware games by this designer guy Nifflas (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED). anyway, i started off playing Final Fantasy 6 which was my absolute favorite game for years, except i only got 5 hours into it and put it down. it's still fun and i like the mood/atmosphere a lot, but i couldn't take the gender dynamics in it anymore, everything leaped out at me. all the women are damsels and "i'm so scared!" and the guys are all "i'll protect you!" woman: "really? thank you!" and the women are all fickle and confused and emotionally damaged and so forth, while even when there's a male character with a tragedy in his past, he's still all tough about it. and the tragedy often involves a woman dying, haha. i don't even care so much that all the female characters are the typical magic-user type and all the dudes are fighters (except for one wizard guy who, you guessed it, is an old man), but i care that their personalities are so stereotypical and eye-rolling. there's one redeeming female character, Relm, who's pretty cool but is hindered by the fact that she's basically useless in combat (doesn't help that her special ability is worthless, too) so you'd never want her in your party anyway. i also kind of hated how MANY characters there are, even though they're all interesting in various ways and i don't dislike any of them, even the damsels-in-distress, it sucks that the cast is so huge because inevitably you end up neglecting a bunch of them toward the second half of the game. you can only have 4 people in your group at a time, and plus some characters become useless as you get better abilities and the enemies get stronger, and with such a big cast several characters fall by the wayside. i'm kind of sad the game didn't hold up and i can't claim it as my favorite game anymore, but there it is.

then i played Chrono Trigger instead, remembering that the characters in that game were pretty good (despite the dumb silent protagonist). no real damsels-in-distress, they're all sort of go-getter types even though two of them are magic-type-people (one is a sweet inventor girl with a turtle shell helmet), one of them is a rockin' cavewoman who's not only strong in personality but the strongest fighter in the game (with her fists!). she does get saddled with a few "sexy" type moves like Kiss and Charm where she strikes a sexy pose and flips her hair but i don't mind it, it fits the character and the animations are funny. but the main problem with Chrono Trigger is that, while you do get some cool character-specific/developmental stories here and there, the cast is largely just a bunch of cogs in an almost heinously plot-driven "go here, do that" type story. the story and setting is still super fun, but sometimes i found myself getting bored because there's sooo much focus on the concepts that the characters are most of the time interchangeable and it doesn't matter who you have in your party, especially toward the end of the game, you'll get the same information and the story progresses the same. i get dulled out and disinterested when the characters, even though they're great characters, end up being so inconsequential.

weird, unsatisfying stuff results from that, like when you recruit Frog (a warrior from the middle ages) and first use a time portal and go to another time period, he doesn't even comment on it. once he joins your party and you defeat his arch-nemesis and finish his "story," he's just another party member to level up. he never reacts to these circumstances or to suddenly fighting alongside a robot from 2000 years in the future. i don't know, maybe i'm asking too much, maybe if the game was like that it would be too heavy or collapse under its own narrative. i don't think it's a tall order, though.

i also kind of don't like how Lucca, the inventor girl, uses guns as her weapon yet causes much less damage than everybody else who uses swords or fists. it's a GUN and later on she gets like a PLASMA GUN and yet Crono and Frog are doing three times the amount of damage using swords, and Ayla the cavegirl does more damage than anyone with just her fists. i know, it's just a game, haha. but still. i'm about 10 hours into the game but i don't think i'm going to finish it again, i think i got my fill. plus LOTS OF WORK TO DO.

gotta get back to work, what am i doing!!! no more video games!
